Always something going in Merida - Weekly free events

Mérida is an amazing place and there’s always something going on! Below are the regular weekly events. All are great but my favorites are the locals dance in Santiago on Tuesdays, the show in Santa Lucía on Thursdays, and the community biciruta on Sunday mornings. Enjoy! (A note Monday – Vaquería Yucateca 9pm Palacio Municipal Calle 62 X 61 y 63 The “Vaquería” is reminiscent of the old “town festivals” of the seventeenth century, which were held in the cattle ranches where the feast of the ironing of the cattle was framed by dances and festivities called by the owner of the farm. This custom is recreated every Monday, with a program in which traditional dances are performed. Live music, by the “Jaranera” orchestra of the Mérida City Council creates a special festive atmosphere. Pork-a-Poolza

I noticed in the weekly flyer for our local grocery store, HEB, that there was a sale on pork butt. Pork butt is actually the shoulder of the pig and the name comes from Boston Butt. This name comes from 1700s New England area where special barrels called butts were used to store the cuts. Regardless on the name, at $1.29 a pound for the bone-in 11 pound slab it was a great buy! And a chance for me to experiment with different recipes. I decided to try three different ways to prepare the meat. I started the preparation on Wednesday by dividing the cut in three for the various uses. This included (1) thin slices of more lean areas to make Al Pastor, (2) fattier chunks to be used for grinding sausage, and (3) the remaining on the bone for a smoked pork. Al Pastor: I prepared a marinade of achiote paste, lime juice, orange juice, garlic, onions, salt, pepper, cumin, vinegar, habanero, pineapple, and rehydrated Guajillo peppers. ...

One Week in Merida.

I wrote this with friends that will soon be visiting Merida in mind. It’s not intended to be a “best of” or a comprehensive list, but a suggestion on things to do to get a good taste of the city. I would love to hear your options in the comments. Note: At tremendous personal sacrifice I re-visited many of these places to make sure the recommendation still held true. Whereas some give sweat & blood for their art, I put up with testing cocktails and eating great food to bring this to you! First our house and the city. The House: If you are staying at Casa Jessica or another Airbnb you will have a similar experience. There are wall unit ACs in the rooms but electricity is expensive and the units are not intended to be run all day. Use them as needed but turn them off when not at home.
