Merida Saturday May 29th - Food

We started the day by walking to Parque Santiago to enjoy a breakfast of Torta Lechon Al Horno.  This delicious sandwich of suckling pig and crispy skin may seem an unusual breakfast choice but La Lupita opens early and serves until the sell out so being a Saturday we wanted to make sure didn’t miss out.  Plus it’s delicious and, at $28 pesos, very easy on the wallet.

After stroll around the vegetable market in Santiago we called an Uber to take us up to the Slow Food Market (a weekly Saturday morning ‘farmers’ market). This is a fun thing to see with booths/tables selling a range of items from vegetables, cheese, honey, and bread.  It seems to be popular with expats both as customers and vendors.

We then continued North to a new supermarket (Chedraui Selecto) where we stocked up on supplies for the visit (wine).

In the afternoon we explored the town by walking up to Pola’s for ice cream (a frequent spot for us) that we ate in Parque de Santa Lucia, visiting the fun bar of La Bianca (Tropical) for cocktails, and coffee and snacks at the Italian restaurant Cena to Carboni.

For dinner that evening we had reservations at Teya (doesn’t it seem like we spend all our time eating and drinking?).  This restaurant is based in a place called Paseo 60.  This is a really cool place.  It is a modern courtyard surrounded by various restaurants on the first floor, including one that seems like a fancy foodcourt.  They had musicians performing classic rock songs on a stage on one end.  The food at Teya was really nice and the service, including a table side cocktail bar, made us feel special.

It was a nice evening so we decided to walk the 1.5 miles back to our house.  Along the way we stopped to see the end of a mariachi band playing at Noche Mexicano (a weekly outdoor market and party).  We also stumbled upon Ish Ta Bai which was a hopping outdoor bar with a fun band, a lively audience, and inexpensive mescal.
