The Merida English Library

The Merida English Library was established over 25 years ago and although it loans books (with a collection of over 15,000 titles) it is so much more.  It is a cultural & social gathering place for the expat community and an activity & educational center.

When I first heard about the place I was a little  apprehensive that I was a place for visitors to escape the local culture for the safety of English speaking and a recognizable US/Canadian/European environment.  This assumption was very wrong!  On the contrary the focus tends to be towards embracing and integration into the local culture.  This is all over the range from their weekly language practice, speakers on local history, and, even, Mexican wine tastings.

During our visits to Merida we have attended a presentation on historic Mayan food, a tour of local art galleries, and a home & garden tour.  Other events that were offered include a regular yoga class, local wine & beer tasting, presentations ranging from archeology to bee keeping, a kids story time, and much more.

When you are in Merida next I strongly recommend a visit to the Merida English Library on Calle 53 # 524 between Calle 66 and Calle 68.  Check out the events and tours available during your stay.
